M&A MARKET UPDATE | 3rd Quarter 2021

Alexander Hutton is pleased to present the latest edition of our Northwest Market Update, M&A activity is at record levels as the "COVID economy" continues to settle! If you didn't catch the last edition, our quarterly report provides data and insights on: transaction counts and trends by industry as well as by state in the NW region, region specific completed transactions and highlights, how the Northwest compares to the rest of the U.S., and more!

In the US today there are 7 million private companies with owners over the age of 55. At the same time, there is $4 Trillion of private debt and equity seeking returns and strategic buyers always looking to “buy vs. build.” With this backdrop, we believe we are in the early innings of a period of robust deal activity which can be seen in Q3 acceleration in both deal count and median deal size. No longer are we having to explain performance pre and post Covid and the fear of capital gains tax hikes seem to have dissipated. For our clients, the durability of their business is paramount and for those that have grown through Covid there are many options to explore. With permanent capital (10-year funds) seeking opportunity, we estimate that we are in the early stages of a multi-year M&A boom.

“Having just closed our 220th transaction, we at Alexander Hutton have been very busy. We recently represented clients that sold to both private equity funds and strategic acquirers. We also helped refinance a fast-growing chemical company and helped raise debt to fund a management buyout.” JAMES THOMPSON, MANAGING DIRECTOR

Anyone having an interest in the buying or selling of companies in our region should find this both interesting and helpful, particularly as the market responds to the latest updates regarding COVID-19. We are grateful to be able to provide these insights on what is happening in the M&A market both locally as well as nationwide.
